Creation vs EvolutionEyes Wide Open-The Human Eye

"The eye is the window of the human body through which it feels its way and enjoys the beauty of the world." - Leonardo Da Vinci

Writers wax poetic about the eye and the beauty it can bring to the mind, but the complexity of the eye is absolutely phenomenal.

In the traditional description of the senses available to the human body we find the sense of smell, taste, touch, sound and last, but not least, sight. It is our vision that most readily informs our mind. We can learn much with the other four senses, but it is the eye that brings information most rapidly to the brain.

It is estimated that the eye contains more than 125 million light sensitive rods and cones. Once chemical impulses are created these signals travel to the brain at a rate of a billion per second.

In evolutionary thought the retina and the lens would have had to evolved simultaneously over millions of years to be as advanced as they are. However the odds of two mutually compatible components evolving simultaneously is beyond calculation. You see, the lens and the retina are inextricably linked. One cannot function without the other. Whatever odds could be developed for the possibility of simultaneous evolution becomes even more miniscule when you consider the body uses two eyes instead of one and both eyes have a direct link to the brain providing consistent input.

While Charles Darwin is considered the 'father' of evolutionary thought, his explanation of how the human eye might have evolved has been proven misinformed at best. Darwin and other scientists of his day did not understand the complex connections between the nerve cells, photo-chemical receptors, and electrical signals that must function in order for sight to be possible. Darwin did admit that the eye caused him problems when trying to explain their presence in evolutionary debate.

"Trilobites could see in their immediate environment with amazingly sophisticated optical devices in the form of large composite eyes. ... The number of individual optical elements in the compound eye could vary from approximately one hundred to more than fifteen thousand in a single eye, a range not very different from that found in modern insects." - Riccardo Levi-Setti

Beyond ancient creatures whose eyes were very sophisticated, Dr. Geoffrey Simmons asserts that the retina contains 7 million cone cells for color assessment, 125 million rod cells for adaptation to the dark, and 1.2 million nerve cells that collect billions of bits of information!

Maybe the eye looks designed because it is designed.
